Surname
The primary record for this Loyalist will be based on the name which is most commonly associated with this Loyalist. If there are other reasonably common alternate spellings, they too may be listed in alphabetical order in the directory. They will however be a bare record which just indicates the “preferred” spelling. Example: Warner, Michael / Werner, Michael / Vernor, Michael – each of the last two would note the first as the preferred spelling.

Status as Loyalist
At various times since 1789 – when Lord Dorchester made the proclamation about “U.E.” – individual Loyalists have been accepted and rejected as Loyalists. Here are some of the various status options which may show here:

  • Expunged – removed from the early Loyalist lists, usually by an Order in Council. Theoretically this implies that the person may not be reinstated, but some in fact were
  • Suspended – removed from the early Loyalist lists, usually by an Order in Council, but with some doubts and a clear opportunity to be reinstated
  • Reinstated – returned to the status as a Loyalist
  • Proven – the Dominion Genealogist(s) at Dominion Office of UELAC have decided that this person is acceptably a Loyalist and his/her descendants are eligible to bear the post-nominals U.E.
  • Disproven – New information has come to light that the Dominion Genealogist of UELAC has decided shows that this person, who had been accepted as a Loyalist, does not in fact meet the criteria
  • Questionable – New information has come to light that the Dominion Genealogist of UELAC has decided shows that this person, who had been accepted as a Loyalist, may not in fact meet the criteria
  • Blank – From original documents such as the UEL Executive List, this person is probably a Loyalist but additional documentation may be required by the Dominion Genealogist before the person is accepted as a Loyalist.
